Purpose and Scope
This document describes a typical Network Server System (NSS)for installation in all types of aircraft. It defines the physicalform factors and fit dimensions. It defines the electricalinterface definition and typical system functions.
The NSS description includes a common file server, dataprocessing, mass storage and interface capabilities to a number ofterminals connected via an onboard aircraft Local Area Network(LAN).
It is the intention of the airlines to apply popular andcommercially available components (Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS)components) for the file server and the transceiver devices. Theseunits may be repackaged for aircraft installation.
The NSS is a central node through which terminals are able tocommunicate with avionics systems, access data and applicationsstored in the NSS mass memory storage. The NSS may be configured toprovide off-aircraft communications via multiple data linksincluding high-speed wireless ground communications with aground-based information system.
The NSS may be used to complement some of the functions of aCommunications Management Unit (CMU) and may provide non-flightcritical aircraft communications.
