Applicability. This regulation applies to theActive Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of theUnited States, and the U.S. Army Reserve, unless otherwise stated.In addition, it applies to the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps andthe Corps of Cadets, United States Military Academy, only whentheir respective uniform regulations do not include sufficientguidance or instruction. It does not apply to the Chief of Staff ofthe Army, or former Chiefs of Staff of the Army, each of whom mayprescribe his or her own uniform. Portions of this regulation arepunitive. Violation of the specific prohibitions and requirementsof specific portions by Soldiers may result in adverseadministrative and/or charges under the Uniform Code of MilitaryJustice.
Purpose The Army is a profession. A Soldier’sappearance measures part of his or her professionalism. Proper wearof the Army uniform is a matter of personal pride for all Soldiers.It is indicative of esprit de corps and morale within a unit.Soldiers have an individual responsibility for ensuring theirappearance reflects the highest level of professionalism. Leaders,at all levels, have a responsibility for implementing and applyingthe standards contained in this regulation to ensure the bestinterests of the Army, including our shared traditions and customs.This regulation prescribes the authorization for wear, composition,and classification of uniforms, and the occasions for wearing allpersonal (clothing bag issue), optional, and commonly wornorganizational clothing and individual equipment uniforms. Itprescribes the uniforms, awards, insignia, and accoutermentsauthorized for wear. It also provides general information on theauthorized material and design of uniforms and the uniform qualitycontrol system.
