This specification prescribes requirements for the classification ofcarbon steel electrodes forshielded metal arc welding.

Safety and health information is available fromother sources, including, butnot limited to, ANSI Z49.1, Safety in Welding, Cutting, and AlliedProcesses,(Footnote 1) andapplicable federal and state regulations.
This specification makes use of both U.S. Customary Units and theInternational System of Units(SI).
The measurements are not exact equivalents; therefore, each systemmust be used independently ofthe other without combining in any way when referring to materialproperties. The specificationwith the designation A5.1 uses U.S. Customary Units. The specificationA5.1M uses SI Units. Thelatter are shown within brackets [ ] or in appropriate columns intables and figures. Standarddimensions based on either system may be used for sizing of fillermetal or packaging or both underA5.1 or A5.1M specifications.
