This specification prescribes requirements for theclassification of flux cored stainless steel electrodes for fluxcored arc welding, flux cored stainless steel rods for root passwelding with the gas tungsten arc process, and metal coredstainless steel electrodes for gas metal arc welding, gas tungstenarc welding, plasma arc welding, submerged arc welding, and anyother process to which they may be applied.1
The chromium content of undiluted weld metal from theseelectrodes and rods is not less than 10.5% nominal and the ironcontent exceeds that of any other element. For purposes ofclassification, the iron content shall be derived as the balanceelement when all other elements are considered to be set at theirspecified minimum values.
Safety and health issues are beyond the scope of this standardand, therefore, are not fully addressed herein. Some safety andhealth information can be found in Annex Clauses A5 and A10. Safetyand health information is available from other sources, including, but not limited to, ANSI Z49.1, Safety in Welding, Cutting, andAllied Processes, and applicable state and federalregulations.
This specification uses both U.S. Customary Units and theInternational System of Units (SI). The measurements are not exactequivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently ofthe other without combining in any way when referring to materialproperties. The specification with the designation A5.22 uses U.S.Customary Units. The specification A5.22M uses SI Units. The latterare shown within brackets ([ ]) or in appropriate columns intables. Standard dimensions based on either system may be used forsizing of filler metals or packaging or both under A5.22 or A5.22Mspecifications.
1Metal cored electrodes, currently also classified inA5.9/A5.9M, will be deleted from the next revision of thatspecification.
