AWS A5.36/A5.36M

This specification prescribes requirements for theclassification of carbon and low-alloy steel flux cored electrodesfor flux cored arc welding (FCAW), either with or without shieldinggas, and carbon and low-alloy steel metal cored electrodes for gasmetal arc welding (GMAW). This new specification replaces both AWSA5.20/A5.20M, Specification for Carbon Steel Electrodes forFlux Cored Arc Welding, and AWS A5.29/A5.29M,Specification for Low-Alloy Steel Electrodes for Flux Cored ArcWelding. It also includes provisions for the classification ofcarbon and low-alloy steel metal cored electrodes which previouslyhad been classified according to AWS A5.18/A5.18M,Specification for Carbon Steel Electrodes and Rods for GasShielded Arc Welding, or AWS A5.28/A5.28M, Specificationfor Low-Alloy Steel Electrodes and Rods for Gas Shielded ArcWelding, as applicable. Iron is the only element of theundiluted weld metal deposited by the electrodes classified underthis specification whose content exceeds 10.5%.

Safety and healthinformation is available from other sources, including, but notlimited to, ANSI Z49.1¹ and applicable federal and stateregulations.

This specification makes use of both U.S. Customary Units andthe International System of Units (SI). The measurements are notexact equivalents; therefore, each system must be usedindependently of the other without combining in any way whenreferring to weld metal properties. The specification with thedesignation A5.36 uses U.S. Customary Units. The specificationA5.36M uses the International System of Units (SI). The latter areshown within brackets ([ ]) or in appropriate columns in tables andfigures. Standard dimensions based on either system may be used forthe sizing of electrodes or packaging or both under the A5.36 andA5.36M specifications.
