This specification prescribes requirements for the classification offiller metals for brazing andbraze welding. It includes filler metals for brazing with or without aflux and in all protectiveatmospheres for various applications, including those for vacuumservice.(Footnote 1) The prefix”RB” indicates that the filler metal is suitable for use both asbrazing rod for braze welding andas a brazing filler metal.
Safety and health issues and concerns are beyond the scope of thisstandard and, therefore, are notfully addressed herein. Some safety and health information can befound in the nonmandatory annexsections A5 and A10. This specification makes use of both U.S. Customary Units and theInternational System of Units(SI). The measurements are not exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem must be used independentlyof the other without combining in any way when referring to materialproperties. The specificationwith the designation A5.8 uses U.S. Customary Units. The specificationA5.8M uses SI Units. Thelatter are shown within brackets [ ] or in appropriate columns intables and figures. Standarddimensions based on either system may be used for sizing of fillermetal or packaging or both underA5.8 or A5.8M specifications.
Footnote 1. – Filler metals for vacuum service are for devicesoperating in vacuum service, regardless of the atmosphere used in making the joint.
