This specification provides requirements for weldingprocedure and welding performance qualification. It is the intentthat this specification be referenced by other documents, such ascodes, specifications, contracts, and quality control or qualityassurance manuals. Such documents are recognized in thisspecification as Referencing Documents. Requirements imposed bythe Referencing Document supersede the requirements of thisspecification.
The requirements for the qualification of welding proceduresare provided in Clause 4, Procedure Qualification. The requirementsfor the performance qualification of welders and welding operatorsare provided in Clause 5, Performance Qualification.
This specification also defines and establishes qualificationvariables. Qualification requirements are based on the premise thatthe Referencing Document will specify fabrication, design, basemetal, filler metal, preheat, interpass temperature, postweld heattreatment, nondestructive examination, and test requirementsapplicable to the product. Welding procedure and performancequalifications which meet the requirements of other codes andspecifications are acceptable, provided they also meet therequirements of this specification.
Base metals and filler metals have been grouped intocategories that will minimize the number of qualification testsrequired. Substitution of one base metal or filler metal foranother, even when within the allowable rules, should only be madeafter an evaluation of the material’s suitability for its intendeduse. For some materials, additional tests may be appropriate toverify the material’s suitability. Materials not listed requireseparate qualification.
