This standard establishes requirements for the qualification ofWelding Supervisors. It describes how personnel are qualified, theprinciples of conduct, and the practice by which qualification maybe maintained.

This specification does not address all safety issues associatedwith welding. It is the responsibility of the employer to establishappropriate safety and health practices and to determine theapplicability of any regulatory limitations prior to welding. Therequirements of ANSI Z49.1, Safety in Welding, Cutting, andAllied Processes, plus the cautionary notes contained in theMaterial Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) supplied by the materialsupplier should be part of each employer’s safety program.Additional safety information is available in the Safety andHealth Fact Sheets published by the American Welding Society(AWS).

As used in this specification, the wordshall denotes a requirement; the wordshould denotes a guideline orrecommendation; and the word may denotesa choice. As used in this specification the wordwelding includes brazing. As used in thisspecification the word welders includeswelding operators, brazers, and brazing operators.

In the qualification process, the candidate must have generalknowledge of the theory and practice of welding and of theresponsibilities and duties of a Welding Supervisor. During theexamination process, the candidate shall be evaluated onwelding-related qualifications and experience and on knowledge ofthe requirements of general applications of codes andspecifications. The employer shall maintain all qualificationrecords. 

This standard is intended to supplement the requirements of anemployer, or other agency and shall not be construed as preemptionof an employer’s responsibility for all work performed. Hence, itis the responsibility of the employer to determine a supervisor’squalifications other than those stated in 1.4 above, and confirmthe capability of performing duties assigned by the employer.

The standard is not intended to supersede or contradict local,state, or national regulations.
