This guide covers the application of thermal spray coatings(TSC) for the protection of steel with aluminum, zinc and theiralloys, mixtures, and composites. This scope of this guide includesthe major elements of an industrial process instruction coveringjob description, safety, consumable materials, surface-preparationand thermal spray equipment, quality control (QC) equipment, TSCoperator training and qualification, a step-by step surfacepreparation and thermal spraying application method with qualitycontrol checkpoints, maintenance and repair of thermal spraycoatings, and a job control record. Nominal TSC feedstock sprayrates and coverage information for a common planning base arepresented for purchasers and contractors. A TSC selection guide forvarious service environments and the operator qualificationrequirements are presented in appendices. This guide is modelled onthe thermal spray method of MILSTD- 2138A(SH), Metal SprayedCoating Systems for Corrosion Protection Aboard NavalShips.’
