Application
This Code covers welding requirements applicable to weldstructures.It is to be used in conjunction with any complementarycode or specification for the design and construction of steelstructures. it is not intended to apply to pressure vessels orpressure piping. Requirements that are essentially common to allstructures are covered in sections 1 through 7, and 11 whileprovisions applying exclusively to stqtic loading (buildings),dynamic loading (bridges), or tubular structures are included insections 8,9, and 10, respectively.
Note: The use of prequalified joints is not intended as asubstitute for engineering judgement with respect to thesuitability of application of these joints to a weldedassembly.
The fundamental premise of the Code is to provide generalstipulations applicable to any situation. Acceptance criteria forproduction welds different from those specified in the Code may beused for a particular application, provided they are suitablydocumented by the proposer and approved by the Engineer. Thesealternate acceptance criteria can be based upon evaluation ofsuitability for service using past experience, experimentalevidence or engineering analysis considering material type, serviceload effects, and environmental factors.
All references to the need for approval shall be interpreted tomean approval by the Building Commissioner or the Engineer.Hereinafter, the term Engineer will be used, and it is to beconstrued to mean the Building Commissioner or theEngineer.
Most provisions of the Code are mandatory when the use of theCode is specified. Certain provisions are optional and apply onlywhen specified in contract document for a specific project.Examples of common optional erquirement and typical ways to specifythem are given in Appendix D.
