THIRD EDITION
This specification sets forth the classification of welded joints ofcarbon and low-alloy steelsfor use in the design and manufacture of machinery and equipmentsubjected to static and dynamicloading. This specification is not intended to dictate loaddetermination, design assumptions,safety factors, or calculation methods. These are the responsibilityof the design engineer. Theintent of this document is to establish the effect of weld jointgeometry, welding practices, andquality control on allowable stress levels. The specification alsoprovides practices that can beused for qualification and examination of welded joints used infabrication of machinery andequipment. It is not the intent of this specification to restrict theuse of other proven methodsand procedures which achieve acceptable results and which have beenagreed to in writing by theOwner and Manufacturer.
This specification makes use of both U.S. Customary Units and theInternational System of Units(SI). The measurements may not be exact equivalents; therefore eachsystem must be usedindependently of the other without combining in any way. Thespecification with the designationD14.4 uses U.S. Customary Units. The specification D14.4M uses SIUnits. The latter are shown inappropriate columns in tables and figures or within brackets [ ] whenused in the text. Detaileddimensions on figures are in inches. A separate tabular form thatrelates the U.S. Customary Unitswith SI Units may be used in tables and figures.
Safety and health issues and concerns are beyond the scope of thisstandard, and therefore are notfully addressed herein.
