This specification defines quality characteristics and metricspertinent to resistance spot welds on steels used in automotiveapplications. The evaluation methods and inspection criteriaspecified herein can be used to evaluate the effectiveness ofparticular welding equipment and procedures used to weld aparticular base material combination. The criteria and metrics arethe same for all welds regardless of the service load. The qualitystandards established by this specification do not constitute alower bound of suitability for service; welds that do not meet theweld quality criteria of this specification may be satisfactory forcertain applications. The acceptance criteria of this standard arenot intended for applications outside this scope (such aspost-crash weld quality assessment): attempts to do so may lead toan erroneous result.
