This guide presents a description of wrought solid solutionaustenitic stainless steels and the most commonly used weldingprocesses and procedures for joining these materials. The mostcommonly used welding processes, including shielded metal arcwelding (SMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arcwelding (GMAW), submerged arc welding (SAW), and flux core arcwelding (FCAW), are discussed in detail; laser beam, electron beam, plasma arc, resistance, and braze welding are not covered in greatdetail.
The welding processes discussed in this guide includerecommended welding parameters, filler metals, shielding gases, andfluxes. Procedure qualifications, inspection and repairconsiderations and methods, and cleaning and safety considerationsare also discussed. Practical information has been included asfigures, tables, and graphs that should prove useful fordetermining the capabilities and limitations in the joining ofaustenitic stainless steels. This guide does not addressmartensitic, ferritic, duplex stainless steels, or cast stainlesssteels.
This standard uses both the International System of Units (SI)and U.S. Customary Units. The latter are shown with brackets [ ] orin appropriate columns in tables and figures. The measurements maynot be exact equivalents; therefore, each system should be usedindependently.
Safety and health issues may not be fully addressed by thisstandard. Users of this standard should consult ANSI Z49.1, Safetyin Welding, Cutting, and Allied Processes, applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and other relevant documentsconcerning safety and health issues not addressed herein.Additional information is available via the AWS Safety and HealthFact Sheets—available for free at www.aws.org. Material Safety DataSheets (MSDSs) are available through the material suppliers; theyprovide information on the health and safety precautions associatedwith the materials and processes discussed within thisdocument.
