Introduction

This Professional’s Advisor is intended to provideinsight and guidance to the welding professional in the preparationof welding procedure specifications and procedure qualificationrecords. In no way is this a substitute nor should it beused in lieu of a code or other standards document.Standards, whether codes or specifications, provide theauthoritative and comprehensive requirements for the WPS andPQR.

This Advisor has concentrated on the common arc weldingprocesses, including SAW, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW. Documentationand qualification requirements differ somewhat among the variousqualification standards. This Advisor is not intended to becomprehensive for all applications, but rather is focused on fivecommon standards:

(1) AWS B2.1:2005, Specification for Welding Procedure andPerformance Qualification

(2) AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2004, Structural WeldingCode—Steel

(3) AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.5:2002, Bridge Welding Code

(4) Section IX, Welding and Brazing Qualifications,ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code 2001 with 2003 Addenda

(5) API 1104 2005, Welding and of Pipelines and RelatedFacilities

The American Welding Society and the Welding Research Councilhave joined in a cooperative effort to generate standard weldingprocedures for industry. The need for pretested welding proceduresthat are supported by adequate test data and that satisfy thetechnical requirements for the commonly used construction codes andspecification has been expressed by many individuals andorganizations. The purpose of a welding procedure qualification isto provide test data for assessing the properties of a weldjoint.

Documentation and qualificationrequirements are subject to change in later editions of thereference codes or specifications.
