INTRODUCTION
The objective of the Welding Inspector Qualification andCertification Program is to determine the knowledge of weldinginspectors who may be required to inspect weldments or weldedproducts, in accordance with codes or other specifiedrequirements.
The examination of applicants for a broadly based weldinginspector qualification/certification program must includerequirements of various codes; standards, specifications, basematerials, filler materials, heat treatment, mechanical properties, welding processes and procedures, inspection methods, acceptancestandards, tests, welding qualification requirements, fabricationtolerances, and other aspects of fabrication and assembly withwhich the welding inspector may be involved. Therefore, theQualification and Certification Committee has formulatedexaminations which include important aspects of these elements offabrication operations which will evaluate the applicant’sknowledge in these areas. The examination also includes the use ofmicrometers, calipers, and weld gauges on specimen. The use of theinspection tools is required to complete part of theexamination.
The examination is designed to determine a level of knowledge ina standardized manner and does not necessarily reflect the level ofcompetence required for each and every standard, code orspecification used in the welding fabrication field.Employers must recognize their responsibility Foradditional training and education as needed to satisfy theirrequirements, and the requirements of standards and specificationsso that welding inspectors may properly perform their assignedtasks.
The Guide provides information on how you can certify yourqualifications as an inspector of weldments according to the AWSStandard for Qualification and Certification of WeldingInspectors,* and become registered with the American WeldingSociety.
The AWS is a nonprofit national organization that has gainedworldwide recognition for its contribution to the science andtechnology of welding. Its members receive such technicalpublications as the Welding Handbook and the monthly WeldingJournal. If you would like more information on other benefits andhow to become a member, check the appropriate box when completingthe attached application form.
