This standard applies to personal flotation devices (PFDs) intended for constant wear to increase the safety of adults (persons with a body mass greater than 41 kg) in situations where a risk of drowning exists. This standard covers devices that are inherently buoyant and those with combined buoyancy.
Note: Personal flotation devices conforming to this standard provide varying degrees of assistance in the water. PFDs increase the chances of survival but do not guarantee it. It is recommended that each individual secure a PFD suitable for his/her body and activity.
This standard applies also to personal flotation devices for water skiers.
