Preface

This publication represents a basic standard for safe operation,substantial and durable construction, and acceptable performance ofvented gas fireplaces. It is the result of years of experience in themanufacture, testing, installation, maintenance, inspection and researchon vented gas fireplaces designed for utilization of gas. There arerisks of injury to persons inherent in appliances that, if completelyeliminated, would defeat the utility of the appliance. The provisions inthis standard are intended to help reduce such risks while retaining thenormal operation of the appliance.

Scope

1.1.1
This standard applies to newly produced vented gas fireplaces (see PartIV, Definitions), hereinafter referred to as appliances, constructedentirely of new, unused parts and materials, and having input ratings upto and including 400,000 Btu/hr (117 228 W).

These appliances are:

a. For use with natural gas;

b. For use with propane;

c. For direct vent gas appliances for manufactured home (USA only) ormobile home OEM installation or aftermarket installation convertible foruse with natural gas and liquified petroleum (propane) gases whenprovision is made for the simple conversion from one gas to the other(see 1.2.21 and 1.2.22);

d. For direct vent gas appliances for manufactured home (USA only) ormobile home aftermarket installation for use with natural gas only orliquified petroleum (propane) gases only (see 1.2.22); and

e. For direct vent gas appliances for manufactured home (USA only) ormobile home OEM installation for use with liquified petroleum (propane)gases only (see 1.2.21).

The performance of vented gas fireplaces for use with the abovementioned gases is covered under Part II, Performance.

1.1.2
Exhibit D.1, Automatic Intermittent Pilot Ignition Systems for FieldInstallation, includes provisions for newly produced (optional)automatic intermittent pilot ignition systems (see Part IV,Definitions), constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials,to be adapted in the field to an appliance equipped with an existingcontinuous pilot burner and which has been examined and tested forcompliance with this standard when installed on the appliance.

A value for measurement given in this standard is followed by anequivalent value in other units, the first stated value is to beregarded as the specification.

1.1.4
Exhibit H, List of Reference Standards, contains a list of standardsspecifically referenced in this standard, and sources from which theymay be obtained. Exhibit H includes both the U.S. and Canadianreferenced standards, where applicable. It is the responsibility of theuser of this standard to determine which referenced standard appliesbased on the requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction for thelocation of installation.

This standard also applies to appliances with draft hoods which arefactory equipped with automatic vent damper devices (see Part IV,Definitions), hereinafter referred to as vent damper devices.
