CSA C22.2 NO. 286-15

This is the first edition of C22.2 No. 286, Industrial control panels and assemblies, one of aseries of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.

Industrial control panels were previously certified by extracting the relevant requirements fromCSA C22.2 No. 14 and using them in concert with applicable sections of the Canadian Electrical Code,Part I. This Standard is intended to facilitate certification of these products by consolidating allof the applicable requirements in a single standard dedicated solely to industrial controlpanels.

This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope ofthe Standard.

This Standard was prepared by the Integrated Committee on Industrial Control under thejurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Industrial Products and the Strategic Steering Committee onRequirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.

Interpretations: The Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety hasprovided the following direction for the interpretation of standards under its jurisdiction: “Theliteral text shall be used in judging compliance of products with the safety requirements of thisStandard. When the literal text cannot be applied to the product, such as for new materials orconstruction, and when a relevant committee interpretation has not already been published, CSA’sprocedures for interpretation shall be followed to determine the intended safety principle.”

1 Scope

1.1
This Standard applies to control panels and assemblies rated at not more than 1500 V, intended to beinstalled and used in non-hazardous locations in accordance with the rules of the Canadian ElectricalCode, Part I.

Notes:
1) Examples of industrial control panels and assemblies as covered by this Standard may include motorcontrol panels, process control equipment panels, heating panels, programmable control panels,controls for cranes and hoists, heating and cooling control equipment, etc.
2) The term “control” as used throughout this Standard applies to both starters and controllers.
3) Electrical instruments, such as meters, that can be included as part of control equipment are notcovered by this Standard.

The industrial control panels covered by this Standard are intended for use in an ambient temperatureof 0 to 40 °C. Additional investigation of the equipment will be required when equipment is to be usedin ambient temperature outside of this range.

This Standard does not apply to equipment or modifications to equipment covered by other CSAStandards, such as:
a) power supplies;
b) automatic transfer switches;
c) elevator equipment;
d) enclosed switches;
e) switchgear;
f) line isolation monitors;
g) panelboards and custom panelboards;
h) hazardous location equipment;
i) hydro-massage equipment;
j) power factor correction capacitor banks;
k) fire pump controllers;
l) assemblies of equipment intended solely for the distribution of power; and
m) motor control centre sections.

In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obligedto satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or thatwhich is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissiblewithin the limits of the standard.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose ofa note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written asrequirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (nonmandatory) to define theirapplication.
