Preface 

This is the second edition of CSA Z1210, First aid training for the workplace — Curriculum and quality management for training agencies. It supersedes the previous edition published in 2017. This Standard has been revised for user clarity, and the major revisions have been made to the following: a) the Scope exclusions (see Clause 1.3); b) the Definitions and Abbreviations (see Clause 3); c) the components of the workplace first aid training design (Clause 4); d) the first aid curriculum competencies are presented in clause form based on training levels and cross-linked with the tables; e) deleted all headings starting with “L” from all tables; f) under the principles of workplace first aid, changed the topic administration of medication to medication assist; g) in Table 1, in the topic category of medication assist, updated the competency “AHJ requirements for workplace first aiders” to assist with medication, and in the topic category of workplace first aider safety and personal protection, updated the competency of “safe procedures for clean-up of work” from “A” to “K” in both the basic and intermediate training levels; h) the first aid certificate validity (see Clause 7.1); and i) new clause on recertification (see Clause 7.3); CSA Group acknowledges the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of the Canadian Association of Administrators of Labour Law — Occupational Safety and Health (CAALL-OSH), including provincial and territorial governments, as well as the Government of Canada. This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Workplace First Aid, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Occupational Health and Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. 

Scope 

1.1 General 

This Standard sets out the minimum requirements for a workplace first aid training program, and provides guidance on the curriculum and quality management for first aid training agencies. 

1.2 Inclusions 

This Standard specifies the minimum requirements and guidance for a workplace first aid training program, and applies to a) program design and development; b) competency levels by topic and for each workplace first aid training level; and c) quality management requirements. 

1.3 Exclusions 

This Standard does not apply to first aid programs that are intended for a) general interest in first aid; b) workplace first aid instructor training; c) specialty first aid training programs, where specific legislation applies; and d) mental health first aid programs. Notes: 1) Additional industry-specific regulatory requirements might apply. 2) Examples of specialty first aid training programs include, but are not limited to, specific programs such as opioid poisoning or workplace naloxone training or environments such as aviation, aquatics, child care, long- term care services, marine, mining, school buses, and transportation. 

1.4 Terminology 

In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
