This specification covers the test procedure for producingenvironmentally related corrosive atmospheres to determine thereaction of plated or unplated surfaces when exposed to differentconcentrations of flowing gas mixtures1&2.

Description

Samples that are to be evaluated may be mated or unmatedconnectors, components, or experimental materials. They are placedin an environmentally controlled chamber that is monitored by algasanalyzing system for controlled concentrations of the gas mixture.Corrosion rates are monitored by copper and, unless otherwisespecified, silver, control coupons placed in the chamber for eachtest. These control coupons are removed and analyzed usingcoulometric reduction for factors related to amount and type ofcorrosive product growth to confirm corrosivity control level.Methods are based upon those developed by W.H.Abbott, BattellColumbus Laboratories, for the Environmental Studies Group.
