PURPOSE
The purpose of this standard is to eliminate confusion, byproviding definitive statements of the conventions involved indetermining the polarity of a magnetic field, and by describingbasic practical methods that may be used, with necessaryprecautions. While it might be considered that the conventions arebasic text-book material, it is found that few text-books statethem explicitly, and disagreement among engineers is observed as aresult. Since some electrical or electronic devices may bedestroyed, if the magnetic field polarity is incorrectlydetermined, it is important that disagreement or confusion beavoided.
