This document provides specifications for flooring, footwear, materials, and equipment used in healthcare facilities to reduce electrostatic charge accumulation and electrostatic discharge (ESD) risk for personnel and equipment as well as risk of contamination cause by electrostatic attraction (ESA). It addresses the risk of ESD causing damage to electronic equipment, corruption of electronic records, and shocks to personnel. It also addresses the risk of ESA causing contaminants to be attracted to surfaces. Finally, it provides background on the risk of ESD causing an ignition of flammables. Mitigation of this last risk is outside of the scope of this document and the reader is referred to other standards for that guidance.
This guidance document applies to healthcare facilities to assist in the design, construction, and operation of these facilities regarding control of electrostatic charging and reducing the risk of hazardous ESD.
It is not intended for medical device manufacturing facilities or operations.
