HPS ANSI/HPS N13.45

This standard provides guidelines for incineration ofcombustible forms of low-level radioactive waste. It addresses thesiting, licensing and permitting, operation and monitoring of theincinerator operation, disposal of residues, and decontaminationand decommissioning. This standard may be applied to incinerationof mixed wastes (i.e., radioactive wastes that contain otherhazardous components as defined by federal or state agencies),provided consideration is given to additional design features andregulatory permitting required by the hazardous nature of thewastes.

For purposes of this standard, incineration is considered atreatment or volume-reduction technique rather than a disposalmechanism. Other volume-reduction techniques have previously beendescribed, such as in “Solid Radioactive Waste Processing Systemsfor Light Water Reactor Plants,” ANSI/ANS 55.1-2009 (1992).
