This standard specifies the construction and testing ofintrinsically safe apparatus intended for use in Class I, Zone0, 1, or 2 hazardous (classified) locations as defined by theNational Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 and for associatedapparatus, which is intended for connection to intrinsically safecircuits which enter such atmospheres.
This type of protection is applicable to electrical apparatus inwhich the electrical circuits themselves are incapable of causingan explosion in the surrounding explosive atmospheres.
This standard is also applicable to electrical apparatus orparts of electrical apparatus located outside the explosive gasatmosphere or protected by another type of protection listed inANSI/ISA-60079-0, where the intrinsic safety of theelectrical circuits in the explosive gas atmosphere may depend uponthe design and construction of such electrical apparatus or partsof such electrical apparatus. The electrical circuits exposed tothe explosive gas atmosphere are evaluated for use in such anatmosphere by applying this standard.
The requirements for intrinsically safe concepts for fieldbusare provided in ANSI/ISA-60079-27.
This standard supplements and modifies the general requirementsof ANSI/ISA-60079-0, except as indicated in Table 1. Where arequirement of this standard conflicts with a requirement ofANSI/ISA-60079-0, the requirements of this standard shalltake precedence.
If associated apparatus is placed in the explosive gasatmosphere, it must be protected by an appropriate type ofprotection listed in ANSI/ISA-60079-0, and then the requirements ofthat method of protection together with the relevant parts ofANSI/ISA-60079-0 also apply to the associated apparatus.
