This standard encompasses mechanical influences, specificallyshock and vibration, for industrial process measurement and controlsystems. Specifications for other environmental conditions, including seismic and transportation, are beyond the scope of thisstandard.
This standard establishes mechanical influence classes fornon-mobile installations, and includes storage.
The classes of environmental conditions that are specified inthis standard are suitable for process instrumentation. Theclasses, which include design, manufacturing, sales, installation, test, use, and maintenance, serve as a guide to establishrequirements for environmental control of buildings or otherprotective housings for industrial process measurements and controlsystems.
These classifications pertain only to the environment externalto the instrument that may affect the instrument externally orinternally.
The effects of environmental conditions on the safety, comfort, and performance of operating and maintenance personnel are notconsidered in this standard.
This standard is limited to vibration and shock only, coveringmechanical influences that affect industrial measurement andcontrol systems.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to classify mechanicalinfluences that may affect process measurement and controlinstruments, in order to provide users and manufacturers of theinstruments with a means of specifying the class of mechanicalinfluences to which a specified instrument may be exposed.
This document is one of a series of standards on environmentalconditions for process measurement and control systems.
