This standard covers airborne contaminants and biologicalinfluences that affect industrial process measurement and controlequipment. Specifications for other environmental conditions, including nuclear radiation and hazardous atmospheres, are beyondthe scope of this standard.
This standard establishes airborne contaminant classes for fixed(non-mobile) installations during normal operation (nonemergencyconditions) or during transportation and storage.
The classes of environmental conditions stated in this standardare suitable for use in activities related to processinstrumentation, including design, manufacturing, sales, installation, test, use, and maintenance. These classes may also beused as a guide when establishing requirements for environmentalcontrol of buildings or other protective housings for industrialprocess measurement and control systems.
These classifications pertain only to the environment externalto the equipment which may affect the equipment externally orinternally.
The effects of environmental conditions on safety, comfort, andperformance of operating and maintenance personnel are notconsidered in this standard.
CAUTION — Airborne or biological contaminantsnot listed in this document could cause equipment damage. Cautionshould be used when a combination of factors approach or surpassclass “X.” Obtaining the guidance of a chemical specialist issuggested when this condition occurs.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to classify airbornecontaminants that may affect process measurement and controlinstruments.
The classification system provides users and manufacturers ofinstruments with a means of specifying the type and concentrationof airborne contaminants to which a specified instrument may beexposed.
This document is one of a series of standards on environmentalconditions for process measurement and control systems.
