This standard covers airborne contaminants and biologicalinfluences that affect industrial process measurement and controlequipment, electronic office equipment, and data center and networkequipment. Specific examples of electronic office equipmentinclude: laptop computers, desktop computers, workstations, servers, data storage hardware, terminals, displays, laser andinkjet printers, copiers, and fax machines. Examples of data centerequipment include: servers, switches, routers, displays, keyboards, data storage hardware, power distribution equipment, and climatecontrol equipment such as heating, ventilating, andair-conditioning (HVAC).† Some examples of networkingequipment include telecommunications hardware, switches, androuters.
This standard establishes airborne contaminant classes for fixed(non-mobile) installations during normal operation (non-emergencyconditions) or during transportation and storage.
The classes of conditions stated in this standard are suitablefor electronic equipment in office, data center, networking, andprocess control environments. Activities addressed by this standardin these environments include design, manufacturing, sales, installation, test, use, and maintenance. These classes may also beused as a guide when establishing requirements for environmentalcontrol of buildings or other protective housings for industrialprocess measurement and control systems.
These classifications pertain only to the environment externalto the equipment that may affect the equipment externally orinternally.
The effects of environmental conditions on the safety, comfort, and performance of operating and maintenance personnel are notconsidered in this standard.
This standard covers airborne contaminants and biologicalinfluences that affect electronic equipment. Specifications forother environmental conditions, including nuclear radiation andhazardous atmospheres, are beyond the scope of this standard.
† HVAC equipment used in IT/data communicationsapplications are commonly referred to as computer room airconditioning (CRAC) units and/or computer room air handling (CRAH)units.
