This standard ensures that persons are warned of the presence of escaping gas well before gas concentrations in the atmosphere reach levels capable of causing a hazard. It identifies when and where odorization is required as the means of detection and where other means of detection can be used.In addition, the Standard specifies minimum odorant concentrations in gas, which include an allowance for wide variation in human olfactory responses and makes requirements for olfactory tests. This Standard incorporates and replaces the requirements of the New Zealand Gas Code of Practice for Odorisation of Gas (NG GCP 3:1993).
