INTRODUCTION
Intent1 The intent of this test isto provide a means of evaluating the effects of low barometricpressure (high altitude) on fiber optic components. Althoughintended primarily for the evaluation of devices such asinterconnecting devices, the method may be applied to othercomponents when applicable and when required by a DetailSpecification.
Alternative Method. This test is similar tothat prescribed by FOTP-15, except that specimens tested underFOTP-15 are immersed in water during low pressure exposure in orderto simulate the effects of moisture condensation which accompanyrapid descents from high altitude. Also, FOTP-190 provides a widerchoice of test pressures than does FOTP-15.
Failure Modes. The potential failure modes forthis test include, but are not limited to:
a. Unacceptable changes in optical transmittance,
b. Unacceptable changes in insertion loss,
c. Unacceptable changes in return loss,
d. Damage to device seals,
e. Other failure modes (such as changes in engagement andseparation forces) may be specified by the DetailsSpecification.
1 This method is similar to Method 105c ofMIL-STD-202.
