W/D S/S BY TIA-455-82
This test is intended to assure that a fluid-blocked fiber optic cableis filled and flooded (orotherwise appropriately fluid-blocked with, for example,super-absorbents) sufficiently to restrictor otherwise prohibit the penetration and flow of water or other fluidwithin the core or along thecable sheath interfaces, or both. The test is designed primarily fortesting filled fiber optictelecommunications cables intended for installations in undergroundducts or directly buried, whereground water pressures are normally encountered; however, this testmethod can be used to assure orto evaluate fluid penetration integrity in other environments byspecifying appropriate fluid(s),test length(s), pressure (s), allowable flow rate(s), etc., in thecable DetailSpecification.(Footnote 1)
NOTE: Fiber optic cables, like many products, are available in amultiplicity of designs, and notall cable designs will perform equally well in this test (nor are theynecessarily intended to beequal). Different cable sheath designs may provide fluid paths, tosome degree, outside of thecable core, but such paths may be no problem in a particularapplication. Although applications forfluid-blocked cables generally require resistance to fluid penetrationin both the core and in allsheath interfaces (or interstices), this may not always be the case.
It is the responsibility of the writer of the Detail Specification forthe fiber optic cableproduct to determine if FOTP-82 should be a required test, how thattest should be imposed (specialsample preparation, etc.), and what the particular performancerequirements should be (amount offluid flow permitted, retest allowance, etc.)
Footnote 1 – This method is similar to the water penetration test fortelecommunications cableappearing in ASTM D 4565.
