This EIA Generic Specification describes the mechanical andoptical performance of optical fiber and optical cable splices usedin optical waveguide communications, Excluded are splices unique tothe fiber and cable manufacturing processes.
Splices covered by this Specification join optical waveguide tooptical waveguide or join optical cable to optical cable or both.Optical waveguides joined may be made from glass, plastic, or acombination of both and may be the sizes as identified inEIA-458-A.
Splice subfamilies shall be described in SectionalSpecifications that will reference this Generic Specification. ABlank Detail Specification, from which a splice manufacturer maydevelop a Detail Specification by filling in performance data onhis product, will reference a corresponding SectionalSpecification.
Splices covered by this Specification fall into two generalenvironmental categories Of protected environment splices, andnon-protected environment splices. Splices can be permanent orsemi-permanent. Definitions of these terms are found in paragraph2.3.
Classification
The following classifications are intended to aid in fullydescribing a splice in a Sectional or Detail Specification.Additional terms may be used, if needed.
Fiber Splice
Cable Structure Splice or Splice Closure
Cable Splice
Hybrid Splice
Definitions for these terms may be found in paragraph 2.3.
