This Standard specifies the electrical characteristics oflow-voltage differential signaling interface circuits that may beemployed when specified for the interchange of binary signalsbetween equipment sharing a common data interchange circuit. Theelectrical characteristics of the circuit are specified in terms ofrequired voltage and current values obtained from directmeasurements of the driver and receiver components at themultipoint line interface points.
The logic function of the driver and the receiver or thecommunication protocol is not defined by this Standard, as it isapplication dependent. Optional receiver input characteristics arespecified to allow idle-line fail-safe or Wired-or signaling atslower signaling rates.
Minimum electrical characteristics of the transmission media andinterconnection requirements are provided, where media refers toprinted circuit board traces (backplane) or cables. Furtherguidelines for application of this Standard are provided in theannexes.
It is intended that this Standard will be referenced by otherstandards that specify the complete interface (i.e., connector, pinassignments, function) for applications where the electricalcharacteristics of a multipoint low-voltage differential interfacecircuit is required. The referencing standard(s) also specify othercharacteristics of the interface (such as signal quality, protocol,bus structure, and timing) essential for proper operation acrossthe interface.
When this Standard is referenced by other standards orspecifications, it should be noted that certain options areavailable. The author of those standards and specifications mustdetermine and specify those optional features that are required forthat application.
