With increasing requirements, many conveyor systems utilize dualdrive arrangements to increase output. Dual drives can provide aneconomical solution by utilizing smaller, more efficient, systemdesigns. However, multiple drive conveyors must proportion the loadbetween drives and load sharing without some type of control isdifficult to achieve. This paper presents a case study on a failureanalysis of a coal mine dual drive conveyor system that experiencedgear reducer failures between 2 to 18months. Physical andmetallurgical inspection of failed gearing did not indicatematerial or workmanship defects, but indicated overload. In orderto determine the cause of the failures, strain gage load testingwas performed. The testing of the conveyor drives revealed loadsharing problems which that will be reviewed.
