The quality of molded plastic gears is typically judged bydimensional feature measurements only. This practice overlookspotential deficiencies in the plastic injection molding process andits effect on the integrity of the plastic material. These deeperissues are often not given proper consideration usually until arelated gear failure demands its study and evaluation. This paperidentifies some of these oversights in the molding process, theresultant effect on the plastic material and discusses their likelyeffect on short and long term gear performance.
